Life often feels like a constant balancing act, especially when you carry the weight of a turbulent past. Growing up in an unsteady home filled with trauma leaves marks that don’t simply fade away. Yet, despite the challenges of being a mom, a wife, and a full-time Street Medicine Nurse, I have found ways to slowly release that trauma and create a sanctuary for myself. This sanctuary is not a physical place but a holistic escape — a blend of tea rituals, essential oils, and mindful practices that help me heal and stay grounded amid chaos.

The Weight of Trauma and the Demands of Caregiving

Growing up in a home where stability was scarce means trauma often becomes a silent companion. It shapes how you see the world and how you respond to stress. For me, trauma was a shadow I carried into adulthood, influencing my relationships and my work. Being a mom and a wife adds layers of responsibility and love, but also stress and exhaustion. On top of that, working as a Street Medicine Nurse means facing the raw realities of homelessness, addiction, and illness daily.

This combination can feel overwhelming. Trauma doesn’t disappear just because life gets busy. It lingers in the background, sometimes surfacing in moments of exhaustion or anxiety. Finding ways to release this trauma is essential for my well-being and my ability to care for others.

Why Holistic Practices Matter

Holistic practices offer a way to care for the whole person — body, mind, and spirit. They provide tools to slow down, reconnect, and heal. For someone juggling so many roles and carrying trauma, these practices are not luxuries but necessities.

Tea as a Ritual of Calm

Tea is more than a drink. It’s a ritual that invites pause and presence. Brewing tea requires attention — the right temperature, steeping time, and choice of herbs. This simple act becomes a moment of mindfulness. Herbal teas like chamomile, lavender, and peppermint have calming properties that soothe the nervous system.

I start my mornings with a cup of chamomile tea. The warmth grounds me, and the gentle floral notes help ease the tension that builds overnight. In the evening, peppermint tea refreshes and relaxes me after a long day.

Essential Oils for Emotional Balance

Essential oils have been part of healing traditions for centuries. Their scents can influence mood and emotions, offering comfort and clarity. Lavender oil is known for its calming effects, while eucalyptus can clear the mind and open the breath.

I use a diffuser with a blend of lavender and frankincense in my bedroom. This combination helps me unwind and promotes restful sleep. During stressful moments at work or home, I carry a small roller bottle of peppermint and lemon oils to inhale when I need a quick reset.

Rituals that Anchor the Day

Rituals create structure and meaning. They can be as simple as lighting a candle, journaling for five minutes, or practicing deep breathing. These acts signal to the brain that it’s time to shift from chaos to calm.

One ritual I cherish is a short evening meditation. I sit quietly, focus on my breath, and acknowledge the emotions of the day without judgment. This practice helps me release stress and prepare for restorative sleep.

Practical Tips for Finding Your Own Holistic Escape

If you’re a caregiver, a professional, or someone carrying trauma, finding your own holistic escape can transform how you manage stress and heal. Here are some practical steps to start:

  • Create a small ritual space: Dedicate a corner in your home for your tea, oils, or meditation. Having a physical space invites you to pause.

  • Choose herbs and oils that resonate: Experiment with different teas and essential oils to find what calms or energizes you.

  • Set a daily intention: Begin or end your day with a clear intention, such as “I choose peace” or “I release what no longer serves me.”

  • Use breathwork: Simple breathing exercises can be done anywhere to reduce anxiety and center your mind.

  • Journal your feelings: Writing down your thoughts helps process emotions and track your healing journey.

Balancing Caregiving and Self-Care

Being a mom and a nurse means your time is often devoted to others. It’s easy to put your needs last. But self-care is not selfish. It’s essential for your ability to give care.

I learned to integrate self-care into my daily routine, even in small ways. Drinking tea while my child naps, diffusing oils during my commute, or taking a few deep breaths between patients — these moments add up. They remind me that I matter too.

Healing Is a Journey, Not a Destination

Releasing trauma is a slow process. It requires patience, kindness, and consistency. Holistic practices don’t erase pain overnight, but they build resilience and create space for healing.

Every cup of tea, every drop of essential oil, every quiet moment is a step toward reclaiming peace. This journey is deeply personal and unique. What works for one person may differ for another, but the key is to find what nourishes your soul.

Healing through chaos means embracing the messiness of life while carving out moments of calm. As a mom, wife, and Street Medicine Nurse, I have found that holistic escapes like tea rituals, essential oils, and mindful practices are lifelines. They help me release trauma, stay grounded, and show up fully for those I love and serve.
